Most individual investors have never looked at timberland – and many picture it as simply buying a forest and waiting 20 years to cut it down. But investing in timberland has just as much to do with the “land” as it does the timber.

John Brenard, who spent a decade in wealth management before co-founding a timberland fund in the Southeast, joins Dustin and Adam to walk through how timberland makes money (including several ways to get paid that have nothing to do with cutting down trees), and why a beautiful tract can still be a bad timber investment.

They also get into whether you really have to wait 20 years for a payday, how a tract can be worth more sold off in pieces than as a whole, why John’s fund doesn’t use any debt, and what a timber harvest means for your tax bill.
